Ritual and Narrative

Marianna Abrahamyan

Civilia 2023, 14(1):40-64 | DOI: 10.5507/civ.2023.003

This article provides the insight into the study of ritual and narrative over the time and theoretically discusses the interconnectedness of the terms with a focus on their similarities and differences and the resulting potential for their collaborative research. The text attempts to demonstrate how narrative can be used within the ritual of president`s speech for the occasion of approaching the end of the year. It shows that the speech does not contribute only to the evaluation of past events of the year but also to the construction of a rite of passage which may lead the statesman to enter the new social environment with a change of his social status.

New media as a means of obtaining information among secondary school students

Markéta Janovská

Civilia 2023, 14(1):65-81 | DOI: 10.5507/civ.2023.004

This contribution is focused on what role new media play in acquiring information among students in the second year of grammar schools and non-grammar school types of high schools. A part is devoted to how media literacy is viewed by different authors and how it is related to media education. The consumption of news by young people is also a topic, for example what is media literacy, or whether young people are able to distinguish between information and misinformation. The information and research contained in the post are part of my diploma thesis, which I defended this June at the Faculty of Social Sciences of Charles University.
