Contemporary societies are going through a turbulent period. Recent technological developments have given rise to a new and qualitatively different system of (political) communication. Hence, the present review essay deals with the changing relationship between politics, media and society. In particular, it focuses on the introduction of recent new communication trends, such as the emergence of Web 2.0 and social networks, the rise of populist political communication, and the mediatization and personalization of politics, and an assessment of their social and political implications. The essay is conceived as a descriptive diachronic case study by framing the phenomenon under study in the broader context of the transformation(s) of (political) communication over the recent decades.
