The study deals with the five-year history of the Pedagogical Institute in Olomouc, which existed from 1959 to 1964. Pedagogical institutes were established in all regional towns in Czechoslovakia in 1959. They provided education for teachers of primary nine-year schools for the first level (first to fifth year) and for the second level (sixth to ninth year). The study has two parts. The general part traces the genesis of the pedagogical institutes in the context of the educational policy of the regime between 1955 and 1964. The second part deals in detail with the specifics of the Pedagogical Institute in Olomouc. The study is based on a thorough research of mainly archival sources stored in the archives in Prague (the National Archive) and in Olomouc (the Zemský archiv v Opavě - branch in Olomouc, the State District Archive in Olomouc). The author also worked with research of contemporary professional magazines - Socialistická škola and Učitelské noviny.
