The paper considers the importance of citizenship education for the meaningful and effective involvement of individuals in civic life in contemporary democracies. Following this, the concept of an open classroom climate is discussed as a potentially suitable teaching strategy on how to effectively pass on civic knowledge to pupils and students. The authors try to answer the following research questions. Whether and if so, why we need civic education and citizenship education? What do we mean by civic education? What should be the content and goals of civic education in today's democracies? And last but not least, what may civic education and citizenship education consist of?
